Atiku Abubakar proposes 2027 plan to reopen borders and restore fuel subsidy

Chapeau introductif

Former Nigerian Vice-President Atiku Abubakar unveiled a comprehensive policy agenda for the 2027 presidential election, pledging to reopen the country’s land borders, cut pilgrimage costs and reinstate petroleum subsidies to tackle economic hardship and insecurity. The proposals, presented at the African Democratic Congress (ADC) campaign launch in Sokoto, aim to boost trade, lower transportation expenses and improve living standards for Nigerians. Atiku positioned the plan as a response to declining welfare, urging voters to back the ADC as a credible alternative for national change.

Border reopening and trade boost

Atiku committed to reopening Nigeria’s land borders to enhance commerce with neighbouring African nations, arguing that restored access would generate opportunities for farmers, traders, transporters and other business operators. He linked the border policy to both economic growth and security improvements, while also promising reduced pilgrimage fares for Muslim and Christian faithful. The former vice‑president said the move would strengthen Nigeria’s commercial relations and create jobs across border regions.

Fuel subsidy restoration

To cushion the impact of rising fuel prices, Atiku proposed reconsidering and reinstating the petroleum subsidy, a measure intended to lower transportation costs and ease the burden of high commodity prices on households. He framed the subsidy as essential for protecting citizens’ welfare, stimulating economic activity and increasing disposable income for ordinary Nigerians. The policy is presented as part of a broader effort to revive the economy and support vulnerable populations.

Campaign momentum in Sokoto

The ADC’s presidential campaign flag‑off in Sokoto drew a large crowd, with party leaders including National Chairman David Mark and governorship candidate Manir Dan’Iya highlighting the growing acceptance of the party in the state. Mark described the enthusiastic turnout from Sultan Abubakar III International Airport through the city as a sign of rising political influence, urging supporters to convert the momentum into electoral victories in 2027. Dan’Iya pledged overwhelming backing for Atiku, vowing to mobilise grassroots structures and secure substantial votes for the ADC across Sokoto.

Security and pilgrimage cost reductions

Atiku linked the border reopening to tackling worsening insecurity, promising a more robust response to criminal activities along the frontiers. He also pledged to lower pilgrimage fares for both Muslim and Christian faithful, making religious travel more affordable and reducing financial strain on believers. These measures, he argued, would not only improve safety but also alleviate economic pressure on religious communities, contributing to overall social stability.
